The potential for freezing rain returns Wednesday morning across the Piedmont, foothills and mountains. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for freezing rain, which we warned about yesterday.

WHAT: As a warm front develops tonight above cold air sitting over the Carolinas, precipitation will develop. In the parts of our area where surface temperatures fall below freezing tonight, this precipitation will occur as freezing rain. A light accumulation of ice may cause treacherous road conditions overnight into Wednesday morning. The best chance of freezing rain will be from i85 west, see the map below. Clouds will move in this evening, before light freezing rain and freezing drizzle starts from the Triad west. A light wintery mix of sleet might start after midnight before changing to all freezing rain or freezing drizzle. The freezing rain will remain around until 9-10am when temperatures climb above freezing.

Freezing rain expected. Though less than a tenth of an inch of ice will accumulate, this will be enough to cause some roadways and sidewalks to become slick, creating hazardous travel conditions. The ground and soil temperatures are right around freezing and with temperatures below freezing, expect icing on Bridges, overpasses, decks, main roads ect. As warmer air moves in Wednesday mid-morning everything will change to rain and problems will go away.

Look at the Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7PM this evening until 5am Wednesday: Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, McDowell, Polk, Gaston, Rutherford, Henderson, Iredell, Lincoln, Jackson, Transylvania, Northern: Alleghany, Ashe, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin. Eastern: Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford. These counties listed above will see Winter Weather Wednesday AM.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.
