SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE ACROSS PARTS OF NC THIS EVENING

A developing storm system will bring the threat of severe weather across parts of the state, the main areas to see some severe weather will be from Greensboro/ Charlotte west. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 2/5 from Charlotte west into the mountains and foothills, further east toward the Center and Eastern part of the state the threat is very low to zero.

WHAT: A shortwave disturbance will approach the mountains and foothills later this afternoon and evening and bring increased moisture. The combination of strong daytime heating and increased CAPE ( Convective Available Potential Energy) this important for the development of severe weather. Models are showing 1800-2400 J/Kg, which should help storms fire this afternoon and evening. I expect a line of storms to develop and move across the western part of the state this evening. This will not be a prolonged event, storms will be in and out very quickly.

TIMING: Storms are developing across Eastern Tennessee now and moving east, they should approach the mountains in the next couple of hours and further east near or at sunset. I do not expect these storms to make it past Greensboro, due to the loss of heat and weak forcing. (see images below)

THREATS: Given moderate instability and strong daytime heating, the main mode of severe weather will be damaging winds, the line of storms will have bowing segments which will enhance the winds. An isolated tornado is also possible but pretty low.

Bottom Line: Be prepared across the mountains and foothills areas to see a line of thunderstorms producing some damaging winds, I do not expect widespread severe weather this evening. I will be here all afternoon and evening posting any updates there are necessary.
